The Areum Story
The Areum is a Korean-American–inspired brand rooted in sustainability, storytelling, and being true to oneself. Blending American and Korean aesthetics, the brand offers artfully crafted goods and baby milestone birthday rental services, thoughtfully created using silks and upcycled fabrics to honor tradition with a modern sensibility.
Each piece is designed to celebrate individuality, culture, and inner beauty.
Areum comes from the Korean word Areumdaum, meaning “beautiful,” originating from the idea of being true to oneself.
Because when you live as your authentic self, that is the most beautiful thing.
Behind The Areum
The Areum was born from a journey of reflection, identity, and purpose.
Founder Angela Kim earned a degree in Fashion Design and spent 15 years working in the fashion industry, leading multiple brands and divisions. While she loved her career, watching the documentary Fashion Reimagined shifted her perspective on fast fashion and its impact on the environment. She began to realize that although she wanted to create beauty, she was contributing to a system that often produced waste.
After months of deep reflection, Angela made the difficult decision to leave her job and explore a more meaningful path. During this time, she took a ceramics class, where an assignment called a “narrative bowl” asked students to reflect on their identity through words, symbols, and storytelling. While working on this project, she realized she could not separate who she is from where she comes from.
As a Korean American, Angela embraces a blended cultural identity rather than hiding it—and allows this truth to guide the brand she built.
The name The Areum reflects this philosophy. “The” represents something one of a kind, while Areum comes from Areumdaum, the Korean word for “beautiful,” rooted in the meaning of being true to oneself.
Through thoughtfully designed goods and services that blend Korean and American aesthetics, The Areum exists to celebrate authenticity, inner beauty, and intentional living.
Because being true to yourself is the most beautiful thing.
