The Beauty of Old Things [오래된 것들이 아름다운 이유]

Why Some Things Never Go Out of Style.

I stood for a long time in front of the old crafts at the Korean Cultural Center.

A candle holder made from recycled paper,

mother-of-pearl hand mirrors and jewelry boxes,

colorful traditional hairpins,

carefully embroidered textiles,

and folding screens and cabinets decorated with folk paintings.

I looked at the traces left by countless hands on old wood,

the light reflected across the mother-of-pearl,

and the delicate texture of embroidery stitched together one thread at a time.

I was fascinated by the thought that time itself could leave behind something so beautiful.

As I looked at each piece, a thought suddenly came to me.

“I would love to have this in my home.”

Even though these pieces were made hundreds of years ago,

I could easily imagine them sitting in a modern home without feeling out of place.

In fact, they looked so refined that I could almost believe they had been made today.

Perhaps the reason some things remain beautiful as time passes

is not because they have somehow defeated time,

but because they carried lasting value within them from the very beginning.

A kind of beauty that captures the eye, regardless of trends.

Perhaps it is because those things never lost their essence.

That is why I love old things.

but because the fact that they remain beautiful through time

quietly shows us what it means for something to hold lasting value.

There are things we want to keep for a lifetime, like heirlooms,

like treasures passed down through time.

Things left behind by someone we love,

things that have been with us for many years,

and things that have gathered deeper meaning as time has passed.

These are the things we cannot easily let go of.

And in that moment, another thought came to me.

I want The Areum to create things like this, too.

Things that we want to take out again, even years from now, rather than things that simply follow a trend.

Things we come to love even more the longer we use them.

Old things have quietly taught me what it means for beauty to endure through time.
