More Than a Celebration [전통이 남기는 아름다움]

The Beauty Tradition Leaves Behind

When I first began The Areum,
I wanted to create something where tradition and a modern sensibility could meet naturally.

One day, a younger friend who knew about The Areum asked me,

“If your business is inspired by Korean tradition,
what about renting traditional settings for a baby’s 100th day or first birthday?”

Her question stayed with me.

I began thinking about how a baby’s Baekil and Dohl are among the Korean traditions that have remained so naturally woven into our lives.

They are more than celebrations of a child growing another year.

They are moments to give thanks for the days that have passed,
to gather the people we love,
and to offer a blessing for the life ahead.

It felt closely aligned with where I wanted The Areum to go.

So I began.

I didn't really know how to create a rental collection at first.
I simply held onto one question:

“What would a mother want this day to feel like?”

With that thought, I began creating one piece at a time.

I made silk Jogakbo banners in different colors,
designed Dohl banners by hand,
and even created a Siltarae cake, inspired by the traditional Korean thread garlands once used to celebrate a child's first birthday.

Instead of simply recreating a traditional object,
I wanted to reinterpret its spirit in a way that felt natural for today.

I also began researching and searching for traditional objects that had once been part of these celebrations.

But somewhere along the way,
I realized that I was learning something more important than how to create a beautiful setting.

I was learning how much I wanted to preserve tradition.

To look again at things that are slowly being forgotten.
To remember where we come from.
To feel proud of the roots that have shaped us.

Perhaps that, too, is a way of carrying tradition forward.

But The Areum doesn't want to simply recreate the past.

We want to take inspiration from what came before
and bring it into the way we live today.

To create something that feels natural in a modern space,
while still carrying the quiet character of where it came from.

Rather than choosing what is already familiar,
we wanted to create pieces with The Areum's own perspective and touch.

To remember our roots,
while allowing our own colors to bloom.

Perhaps that is the kind of meeting between tradition and modernity that The Areum has always been searching for.

And perhaps,
that is why The Areum Rental began.

Not simply to keep tradition in the past,
but to let it live again
in the middle of a family's most precious day.

Because sometimes, a celebration can be more than a celebration.

It can become a way of remembering where we come from,
honoring what has been passed down to us,
and creating something beautiful to pass on.
